The Stearns County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is hosting a Shoreline Restoration Bus Tour around Lake Koronis and Rice Lake on Tuesday, July 23rd from 3:00PM-8:00PM. The tour costs $10 to attend. Space is limited, so RSVP by Thursday, July 18th at www.StearnsCountySWCD.net/Shorelinetour.
The tour kicks off at Veteran's Park in Paynesville with registration at 3:00PM, followed by a short presentation on the importance of shoreline restoration. Then, the coach bus will take participants around Rice Lake and then Lake Koronis for a scenic ride to see firsthand how private residences have implemented solutions to improve water quality and beautify their shorelines. Shoreland owners will be on site to discuss their shoreline restoration and/or water quality project.
Participants will learn:
The benefits of natural buffers and native plantings for stabilizing shorelines and preventing soil loss.
How rain gardens and native vegetation filter runoff, keeping pollutants out of our lakes and rivers.
How to create healthy habitats that provide food and shelter for a variety of animals.
“Shoreline restoration is a critical practice for protecting our lakes and rivers,” said Greg Berg, Riparian Resources Specialist with Stearns County SWCD. “This tour is a great opportunity to see firsthand how these projects can make a difference for our lakes and the entire watershed.”
The tour will be led by Stearns County SWCD staff with support from the Meeker SWCD and North Fork Crow River. A light meal of sub sandwiches, water, and chips will be served once the tour has concluded around 7:30PM at the Veteran’s Park shelter.
The Stearns County SWCD is a local unit of government that works with landowners to conserve soil, water, and other natural resources. The SWCD provides technical assistance, cost-share funding, and educational programs to help landowners achieve their conservation goals.
