HomeEducational Activities > Senior and Junoir Envirothon

What is the Envirothon?   It is a competition for students (6th through 12th grade) to challenge their environmental knowledge and skills.  Five learning stations are presented by natural resource professionals in the fields of water, wildlife, forestry, soils, and a current environmental issue.

Where are they held? Eight area competitions are held throughout Minnesota.  The top three Senior Envirothon teams from each area progress to the state competition and the winner of Minnesota's competition advances to the National Envirothon.

Who participates?  Teams of 4-5 students work collaboratively to answer 20 questions at each learning station.  Students must be in grades 9 through 12 for the Senior Envirothon and grades 6 through 8 for the Junior Envirothon.

St. John's wins 2011 State Envirothon

St. John's Preparatory School won first place at the 2011 Minnesota State Envirothon, an annual environmental learning competition for high school students, held May 16 at Spirit Mountain in Duluth.  About 175 students in grades 9-12 competed on 35 teams from 24 schools throughout Minnesota.

The teams compete by visiting five learning stations and taking an exam at each station. Four of the stations are the same each year: forestry, soils, water quality, and wildlife.  The fifth station is a current events topic. This year's topic was "Fresh & Salt Water Estuaries."  Teams also made a brief oral presentation on this topic before a panel of three judges.

St. John's Preparatory had placed 1st at the MASWCD Area II Senior Envirothon competition held at the Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center in Spicer on April 27. Another local school, Albany High School, had placed 3rd at that competition.
