Nutrient and Manure Management
Nutrient Management Planning is a process that helps producers identify and manage the location, rate, timing, form, and method of all nutrient applications. The goal is to optimize crop yields while minimizing the nutrient movement toward surface and groundwater resources.
Even though nutrient management plans are not always required, they are a critical best management practice for good farm management.
Stearns County SWCD offers technical assistance to landowners who are developing nutrient management plans. The SWCD also has weigh scales that can be checked out of the office for calibrating manure spreaders.
Managing or applying animal waste for hire? Commercial Animal Waste Technician (CAWT) testing is available through the Stearns County SWCD. Click CAWT for more information.

Rosholt Farm Project:
A Public and Private Partnership to Improve Nitrogen Fertilizer Efficiency and Protect Groundwater This project will provide a better understanding of nitrogen fertilizer management and the associated water quality impacts on irrigated, coarse-textured (sandy) soils. This will be accomplished through a unique partnership between local soil and water conservation districts, a local co-op, the University of Minnesota and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.
