Future Pressures on the River Corridor |
Project Overview
The
Mississippi Renaissance Project provides the support necessary to focus
the power of local units of government to act collaboratively for the
purpose of preserving and enhancing the functions and values of the
Mississippi River corridor in Central Minnesota.
The Mississippi River is a world-renowned landmark – an icon of
Americana that flows through our community. Of its many functions,
it serves as fish and wildlife habitat as well as habitat for humans.
It serves humans as a supplier of drinking water, provider of power,
recreational area, a visual asset, an economic engine and a receiver of
storm water and other wastewater. However, the Mississippi River
has acted as a boundary between communities. In many ways, it is a
symbol of what “divides”, being on the margin of both Benton and Stearns
counties and between cities, for instance. This project strives to
be a landmark that “unites” and places the Mississippi at the center of
our attention, initiating a visioning process that is unique to this
remarkable resource.
